Abstract

803,040. Cold separation of gas mixtures. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. Nov. 2, 1956 [Nov. 5, 1955], No. 33522/66. Class 8(2). Separation of readily condensible constituents e.g., water vapour and carbon dioxide from a gas mixture, e.g., air is effected in a heat exchanger duet having a plurality of baffles, e.g., studs 2, Fig. 1, projecting from a common supporting plate 1 in thermal contact with a source of cold, e.g., the head 6 of a gas refrigerator 7 ; the studs 2 being arranged in concentric circles 3, 3a, 3b &c., the outer one forming the gas inlet and the inner one bounding a central outlet 8 and the mean temperature difference between adjacent circles of studs in the direction of gas flow being not greater than 20‹C. The so purified air is liquefied in a chamber 9. In a modification the incoming mixture is guided by a plurality of partitions to follow a spiral path. In a further modification the baffles comprise concentric perforated cylinders 20a, 20b, 20c, &c., Fig. 3, projecting upwardly from a support plate 19 connected by a rod 18 to the boiler 16 of a fractionating column, and the purified gas traverses the central outlet 23 to an annular space 24.
