Abstract

1532757 Heat exchanger system SULZER BROS Ltd 23 Sept 1977 39752/77 Heading F4S In a heat exchanger system for a high temperature gas-cooled reactor, a primary gas at high temperature yields useful heat to a working gas. The primary gas enters and leaves the system as indicated at the bottom left of the Figure. The working gas enters and leaves as indicated at the top of the Figure. Heat exchange occurs between the gases (a) where they are respectively outside and inside of sheathing tubes 31 and (b) in countercurrent heat exchangers 47 comprising tubes 41. Flow of the primary gas is guided by a central cylindrical jacket 21. Primary gas passes through supply pipe 25, static mixer 27 and then up through the cylindrical jacket 21 where it contacts the outsides of the sheathing tubes 31 and is cooled. Thereafter the primary gas passes over the top of the jacket 21 and down through tubes 60 which surround the heat exchange tubes 41. The primary gases then pass downwardly to a rotor 73 whence they are blown upwardly through an annular chamber 78 and then pass downwardly through an outer annular chamber 79 and are returned via a duct 15 to the reactor core chamber. Working gas to be heated passes down through annular spaces 53 and 51, thence through tubes 50 and 42 and thereafter upwardly through the tubes 41 where it is heated by counterflow heat exchange with the primary gas flow. The working gas then passes into a dome 6, downwardly through the sheathing tubes 32, where further heating occurs, and upwardly through inner tube 33 and away from the system through an outlet pipe 37 to a heat load such as a gas turbine group or a chemical plant. A modified heat exchanger system which is similar but enables inspection or testing with little dismantling is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown).
