Abstract

1488349 Tubular heat exchangers; boilers HALDOR TOPSOE AS 29 Nov 1974 [7 Dec 1973] 56843/73 Headings F4S and F4A [Also in Division F2] In a shell and tube heat exchanger 13 particularly for use as a waste heat boiler and comprising a bundle of tubes 14 extending between inlet and outlet tube sheets 15 and 16, the inlet tube sheet 15 is joined to the shell 17 by a connection capable of accommodating both radial expansion of the tube sheet 15 and axial expansion of the tubes 14, the connection comprising a cylindrical skirt 41 and an annular sheet 42. One end of the skirt 41 is connected to the tube sheet 15 while the other end is connected to the annular sheet 42 which in turn is connected to the shell; all connections are made by welding. In use hot process gas is passed through the tubes 14 to be cooled by water circulating in the shell 17. Feed water is supplied to the shell through bottom inlets 30 and a steam-water mixture is removed from the shell through top outlets 29. Ferrules 24 of heat resistant steel provided with anchor rings 25 are inserted into the inlet ends of the tubes 14 to protect them from the incoming hot gas supplied through a refractory lined duct 11. Each ferrule 24 is surrounded by refractory packing 27. The inlet and outlet headers 12, 13 and the tube sheet 15 are provided with insulating linings 22, 28 and 23 respectively. The outlet tube sheet 16 may be connected to the shell 17 in the same way as the inlet tube sheet 15.
