Abstract
Design and method of construction of helical tube in shell heat-exchanger, e.g. of vertical tube type as used for generation of steam from water by counter-current exchange with liq. sodium in shell. Tubes are welded together, by lugs or continuous longitudinal fins, into strips of e.g. 8, and fed onto cylindrical former (which may be temporary, or comprise the inner shell cylinder, or an inner sheet of tubes), to form helices, adjacent strips being then welded to form eventually a bundle of discrete concentric sheets between the inner and an outer shell. These sheets are self-sustaining and may be supported solely by pipes connecting tubes to inlet and outlet heads, thus avoiding wear and corrosion encountered with tie rods normally used to support tube-bundle.
