Abstract

A heat exchanger includes a tubular shell which contains a bundle of spaced tubes surrounded by a pervious material. The tubes are mounted in tube sheets at both ends but at least one of the tube sheets is able to move relative to the shell to allow for thermal expansion and contractions. One heat exchanging fluid is passed through the pervious material whilst the other fluid is first passed through a portion of the tubes and then through the remainder.
