Abstract

764,119. Cold separation of gases. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Jail. 11, 1955 [Jan. 13, 1954], No. 871/55. Addition to 746,436. Class 8(2) In the separation of one or more condensible components of a gas mixture, e.g. the water and carbon dioxide content of air by cooling in a heat-exchanger as claimed in the parent Specification and comprising a plurality of fins or vanes 20, 21, Fig. 1, projecting laterally from carrier parts 16, 17 bridged by a member 18 and connected at one end to a thermal sink, e.g. a known gas refrigerator, and wherein the mean temperature of the vane or vanes on which deposition of a component begins is maintained at not more than 20 ‹C. below the highest temperature at which deposition can occur and also wherein the temperature difference between successive vanes in the direction of gas flow is not greater than 20‹C., the gas mixture is precooled in another heat-exchanger 34 by thermal contact with a cooling medium. The latter comprises the cooling water of the gas refrigerator. In operation air entering through apertures 28 is precooled by coil 34, water ice is deposited on apertured vanes 21 carbon dioxide is deposited on apertured vanes 20 and liquefaction occurs on apertured vanes 19 projecting from an extension 15 of the carrier part 16; the liquid being run off through an outlet 31. In a modification the thermal sink comprises a boiler 43, Fig. 3, of an air separation column 41 and the apertured vanes 54, 52 on which water and carbon dioxide ice is deposited project from tubular members 48, 46 located below the boiler bottom 44. The precooling exchanger comprises a water duct 65, 66 below the lowermost vane 54. The so purified air at substantially atmospheric pressure is fed through a duct 62 to the column 41 from which nitrogen gas is passed to a gas refrigerator where it is liquefied and returned through a duct 71 as reflux. Oxygen vapour passes down the tubular members 46, 48 to an outlet 57.
