[Class 32] [Also in Group XXVIII] A compressed gaseous mixture is separated into a substantially pure relatively high boiling point constituent and a relatively low boiling point fraction by precooling the mixture to the condensation temperature by heat interchange with a mass of the high boiling point constituent in the liquid phase, sub-cooling the condensed mixture, expanding it and then subjecting it to rectification ; the sub-cooling medium being circulated around the rectification zone to shield it against ingress of heat. The separated low boiling point fraction may be employed as the sub-cooling medium. By sub-cooling the mixture prior to expansion, the amount of high boiling point constituent in the separated low boiling point fraction is reduced. The invention may be applied in the separation of compressed air into substantially pure oxygen and a nitrogen fraction. The compressed gaseous mixture is fed through a conduit 15 to a heat exchanger 16 in the reboiler 11 of a packed rectification column where it is precooled by the separated liquid high boiling point constituent. The precooled mixture is then sub-cooled in the tubular helix 17 mounted in the casing 22 through which the separated low boiling point fraction passes. The sub-cooled mixture flows through the expansion valve 18 and is distributed over the contact mass in the column by the distributor 19 which has several outlets 24 extending down into the contact mass. As the temperature of the low boiling point fraction flowing through the casing 22 is lower than that of the peripheral portions of the contact mass in the column, the latter is surrounded with a static air shroud 23 which acts as a thermal insulator.
