Abstract
1,075,475. Air-cooled condensers for distillation columns. F. HERMANN and K. WARTENBERG. Aug. 14, 1964 [Sept. 19, 1963], No. 33297/64. Heading B1B. An air-cooled condenser for a distillation column comprises substantially vertical vapourlanes which are laterally defined by hollow heatexchange elements 5 the lower ends of which are open to the atmosphere and the upper ends open into dome 20 so that air is drawn up through the finned-interior of the elements by fan 24. The vapour from the head of the column is conducted through two short pipes 1 (only one is shown) into vessel 3 and is then distributed into the vapour-lanes. The condensate flows down to collection trays 6 below which is a condensate-cooling zone comprising the lower sections of the exchange elements. Trays 6 consist of sectional strips inserted into the lanes. The cascaded trays 7 cause the condensate to flow in a zig-zag course through the cooling zone. The condensate can flow into receiver 14 through two routes. If valves 12 are closed, condensate will be dammed-up in the lower part of vessel 3 and hot condensate will flow over walls 8 into the receiver 14; but if valves 12 are fully open, all the condensate will flow through the cooling zone and then through pipe 11 into the receiver. Any intermediate position of valves 12 will determine the ratio of hot condensate to cool condensate flowing to the receiver; and the two streams mix on baffle system 13 before reaching the receiver. The temperature of the condensate in the receiver is sensed by a suitable element (not shown) associated with a relay which automatically adjusts valves 12. Part of the condensate is withdrawn from the system through pipe 16, and the remainder refluxes to the column through pipe 17. Inert gases in vessel 3 rise over trays 18, and are withdrawn through pipe 19'.
