974,691. Air-cooled heat-exchangers. HAPPEL G.m.b.H., [trading as GEA LUFTKUEHLEBGESELLSCHAFT HAPPEL G.m.b.H. & CO. KOMM GES.]. June 18, 1963, No. 24294/63. Heading F4S. A cooling tower 1 for cooling a liquid or condensing a vapour comprises a plurality of heatexchange elements 3 or 3a arranged at the base of the open-topped tower, the fluid flowing in the elements being cooled by the air flowing over them as it enters the tower, by-pass air inlets of variable cross-section which allow incoming air to by-pass the heat-exchange elements being provided. The closing members of the inlets may be controlled by thermostats responsive to the temperature of the ambient air and/or the entry or exit temperature of the fluid. Shuttered by-pass inlets 4 separate from the elements 3 may be provided, the shutters 5 being adjusted independently or in groups (see Fig. 1). Embodiments are shown in which the openings 4 are above or below the elements 3. Alternatively, the lower wall la of the tower may be of zig-zag plan and within it groups of elements 3 and groups of by-pass inlets 4 are arranged alternately (see Fig. 6). Other embodiments, Fig. 11, have outwardlypivotable heat exchange elements 3a provided in apertures 7 in the wall. The pivots 8 may be horizontal and placed at the centre or towards the top or bottom, as shown, of the aperture, or vertical and placed at the centre or towards the sides. The fluid-conducting pipes attached to the pivotal elements are flexible or articulated, while the elements themselves may comprise finned tubes extending between headers.
