Abstract
In an evaporative heat exchanger, e.g. a cooling tower, wherein water to be cooled flows downwardly from a plurality of nozzles 22, through a heat exchange region 11, to be collected in a V-shaped sump 13, a damper 34 is provided in the housing of a centrifugal blower 17 to control the amount of cooling air supplied to the heat exchanger. The sheet metal damper 34 is movable between a full open position, where it is parallel to the flow of air, and a position of maximum choke (see Fig. 3) in which the flow of air is substantially reduced. A stationary baffle 38 located downstream of the damper acts to subdivide the air stream in that region. The baffle may alternatively comprise two spaced rods (50, 51, Fig. 4, not shown). Water collected in the sump is withdrawn through a conduit 24.
