Abstract

1488505 Cooling apparatus ICMS Ltd 2 May 1975 [30 May 1974 11 Nov 1974] 24024/74 and 48748/74 Headings F4K and F4S Cooling tower.-Water to be cooled is supplied to a spray header 11, Figs. 1 and 2, and is evaporatively cooled in a housing 1 as it passes from nozzles 13 to a pan 7 via a heat transfer fill 17, the water being contacted by air blown from a fan 18 in the housing. The cooled water collects in the pan 7, passes through strainer 36 and leaves the housing through an outlet 38. The heat transfer fill may comprise corrugated asbestos sheets; or the fill may be of plastics, wood or steel. The air enters the housing through apertures 29, passes upwards and leaves through a moisture removal member 9. Evaporative coolers and condenser.-In modified apparatus as shown in Fig. 3, the heat transfer fill is replaced by a pipe bundle 50 through which flows a gas or liquid respectively to be condensed or cooled by the evaporatively cooled water, the water being recycled through a pipe 55. In all the above mentioned apparatus, the fan may be centrifugal as shown or axial, Fig. 5 (not shown). The fan may have a casing 19, Fig. 2. The casing may be adjustable to alter the air flow direction. There may be an air directing baffle 35. To keep the water level in the pan 7 from falling below a predetermined level there may be a ball float valve 43, Fig. 1, connected to a fresh water supply 44. The illustrated spray means 11, 12, 13 may be replaced by an apertured pan or trough. The cooling apparatus may be in the form of a module, a plurality of which may be mounted side by side, Figs. 8 to 11 (not shown). Materials from which parts of the apparatus may be constructed are specified.
