Classes 7(2) and 7(3) In a compressionignition engine having a scavenging phase in its work cycle, the total fuel charge per cycle is injected in two successive fractions, the first fraction being injected into an auxiliary combustion chamber 1, Fig. 1, which communicates with the main combustion chamber but is substantially protected against scavenging, and the remaining fraction being injected towards the end of the compression stroke. The fuel fractions may be injected from the same or different injectors and the second fuel fraction may be injected into either the main or auxiliary combustion chambers. The auxiliary combustion chamber can be located in the main combustion chamber wall, cylinder block, cylinder head or piston head. The first fuel fraction is injected before the piston reaches the half-way point in its suction stroke for a supercharged four stroke engine or between 190 degrees and 160 degrees before compression top dead centre for a two stroke engine. The ratio of the cross-section of passage 11 to that of the auxiliary chamber 1 is lower than ¢ and preferably in the range <SP>1</SP>/ 50 to <SP>1</SP>/ 4 . Specification 878,278 is referred to.
