Abstract
916,071. Tubular heat exchangers. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. Jan. 26, 1959 [Jan. 27, 1958; Jan. 12, 1959], Nos. 2125/59 and 1135/59. Divided out of 913,207. Class 64 (3). In a tubular heat exchanger unit comprising a bank of tubes of small internal diameter extending between a pair of headers, the tubes are closely pitched and are welded internally to the headers or to stub tubes extending therefrom. When the unit is located wholly within a shell the headers are connected to inlet and outlet connections by branch connections leading out through the shell. Apparatus incorporating various configurations of tube are described, in all of which the headers are secured in position in the shell by means of the branch inlet and outlet connections which may be located at opposite ends or at the same end of the shell. A single tube group or a plurality of series or parallel arranged tube groups may be provided in the shell each group extending between headers. In one form (Fig. 7, not shown) the shell side fluid may be directed by baffles in two sinuous passes through the shell. Access to the tubes for maintenance may be provided through a removable end cover 111. Access doors may also be provided near the ends of the shell (Fig. 4, not shown). Typical tube sizes are given. In the form shown, heat is exchanged between two fluids flowing respectively through two tube groups 306, 308 extending between headers 302, 310 and 304, 312, through an intermediate heat transfer fluid in the shell 300, the shell having means (not shown) for detecting leakage of fluid from either tube group into the intermediate fluid.
