Abstract

1342679 Heat exchanger BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd 19 April 1971 [22 Jan 1970 5 June 1970] 20212/71 Heading F4A A heat exchanger comprises a container 1, heat exchange tubes 24 therein connected at one end to tubes 18 which pass separately through the container to headers 20 beneath the container, and at the other end to tubes 17, the tubes 18 and the headers lying within the downward projection of an imaginery cylinder surrounding the tubes 24. The tubes 54 may lie within a cylindrical baffle 5 and be helically coiled around a cylinder 6. The headers 20 are connected to water pipes 21, and are provided with tube plates 19 which receive the lower ends of the tubes 18, which pass through plates 12 in inlet cylinders 11 in the base 4 of the container 1. The plates 12 are larger in area and are thinner than the plates 19. The tubes 17 pass through tube plates 14 of outlet cylinder 13 in the top 3 of the container, which converge to steam pipes 16. The heating fluid, preferably molten sodium, is admitted to the container through pipe 10 and leaves through pipe 9; above the liquid is an atmosphere of argon, and safety pipes 22 are provided with bursting diaphragms 23. The tube assembly may be removed for maintainence or inspection after making cuts L1 and L2 and disconnecting the water and steam pipes; after replacement of the assembly the apparatus may be butt welded at the cut lines. In a further embodiment (Figs. 3-5, not shown) the inlet cylinders 11 and plates 12 are replaced by an annular plate (42) having a plurality of holes (67) through each of which an inlet tube (48) passes, being connected to the plate by a sleeve (54). In this embodiment the outlet cylinders (43) are in the side of the container and sodium inlet pipe (40) is in the top.
