Abstract
785,862. Heat exchangers; steam superheaters. FOSTER WHEELER, Ltd. Jan. 3, 1956 [Feb. 8, 1955], No. 3714/55. Classes 64(3) and 123(3) In a heat exchanger of the "shell and tube" type for exchanging heat between a liquid such as molten sodium or radioactive water and a second fluid such as steam or non-active water, the ends of the tubes 14 are mounted in double tube plates providing therebetween a space to which a gas or vapour inert to either of the heat exchanging fluids is supplied under a pressure substantially equal to that of the liquid or one of the liquids. Preferably the aforesaid liquid is maintained under pressure by an inert gas such as nitrogen supplied from an expansion tank from which the gas is directed to the space between the tube plates. In the form shown, spaces 16, 16<1> are provided by the double tube plates at each end of the shell the inert gas being supplied through pipe connections 18, 18<1>. Further pipes 20, 20<1> connect the spaces 16, 16<1> to means for detecting leakage of either heat exchanging fluid into either gas space. Specification 772,765 is referred to.
