915,888. Making plutonium electrolytically. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 1, 1961 [Jan. 29, 1960], No. 3359/60. Class 41. Plutonium is made by electrolysing a solution of plutonium trifluoride or trichloride in a fluoride melt, preferably a eutectic mixture of Li, Ca and Ba fluorides, at 5 to 5.3 v. and at about 750‹ C. In examples, the above eutectic mixture fusing at 704‹ C. is loaded into a tantalum inner vessel mounted in a stainless steel outer vessel, which is evacuated and plutonium trichloride or tri-fluoride added. An anode of graphite, and an anodized tantalum cathode is used, operating at 5 to 5.2 v. and at 750‹ C.
