Abstract
832,190. Electrolysis of fused metal salts. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 17, 1956 [Sept. 29, 1955], No. 27698/55. Class 41. Metals having more than one valency are obtained by electro-deposition from a mixture of fused salts containing a salt of the metal in the lower state of valency, in the presence of a reducing agent in the anode region, whereby formation of compounds of higher valency is suppressed. Hydrogen is specified as the reducing agent, and is fed through a hollow tube anode of graphite, and passes upwardly around the outer surface thereof. The lower chlorides of U, Ti, V, Zr, Nb, mixed with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chloride, are used as fused electrolyte with, e.g., a uranium or molybdenum metal rod as cathode. Electrolysis is effected initially in the presence of argon.
