775,585. Electroplating with corrosionresistant metals of Groups IV (a), V (a) and VI (a). HORIZONS TITANIUM CORPORATION. Sept. 20, 1954 [Sept. 30, 1953], No. 27165/54. Class 41. A metal body or support is clad with one of the corrosion-resistant metals of Groups IV (a), V (a) and VI (a) by electrolysis under an inert atmosphere in a fused salt bath, comprising by weight at least 50 per cent of an alkali or alkaline earth metal halide, at least 15 per cent of a double fluoride of an alkali metal and the corrosion-resistant metal, and from “ to 10 per cent of water, by maintaining the bath above its melting point but below that of the cathode, the corrosion-resistant metal, and alloys thereof with the cathode. The anode is preferably of graphite, e.g. the bath container, but it may be a consumable anode containing the cladding metal, while the cathode is of any metal other than the cladding metal having a melting point above 600‹ C., e.g. copper, iron, steel, stainless steel, molybdenum-iron alloys, nickel, one of the said corrosion-resistant metals or alloys of nickel with molybdenum, copper or chromium. An applied cell voltage of 4.5 to 8 volts is employed to yield a cathode current density of 100 to 500 amps/sq. dm. and the cell atmosphere is kept free of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon-containing gases as by vacuum operation or by passing argon through the cell.
