Abstract
790,870. Electrodeposition of refractory metals. HORIZONS TITANIUM CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1955 [Sept. 10, 1954], No. 24542/55. Class 41. In the electrodeposition of the refractory metals of Groups IVa and Va, water and contaminant elements, e.g. iron, chromium and aluminium, whose salts and oxides are more electropositive than those of the said refractory metals, are removed from the fused salt electrolyte by a preliminary electrolysis in an inert atmosphere at a cell voltage above that required to decompose said water and contaminant salts and oxides for a time sufficient to effect removal of the contaminants, and, after changing the cathode, electrolysing the purified bath to deposit the refractory metal cathodically. Typically the preliminary electrolysis is carried out at the same voltage as for the subsequent refractory metal deposition but with only half the current density. In examples, the bath purified consists of potassium fluotitanate or fluozirconate with sodium chloride, the graphite crucible being the anode and the cathode being graphite during the preliminary electrolysis and steel during the refractory metal deposition.
