Abstract
1,150,510. Producing nitrous oxide electrolytically. S. RAVIV and S. MALKIELY. Aug. 21. 1967 [Sept. 5, 1966], No. 38381/67. Heading C7B. Nitrous oxide is produced by the electrolysis of nitric acid using an inert metal as anode and as cathode a metal which is passivated by nitric acid, the cathode current density and temperature and concentration of the bath being selected so as to avoid dissolution of the cathode, and the gas mixture adjacent the cathode containing nitrous oxide is withdrawn. The anode may be of any noble metal or alloy of such metals, e.g. platinum, while the cathode may be of stainless steel or Al, Cr, Ni, Ti, U or Zr or their alloys. Preferably the limits for the current density are 1 to 150 amps/dm<SP>2</SP> and the nitric acid concentration is from IN to 8N. An apparatus is described comprising separate anode and cathode compartments with a communicating tube having a T-junction via which the nitric acid electrolyte is supplied. Gas collecting vessels with appropriate isolating taps are provided for both compartments, the cathode compartment having two such vessels arranged in parallel to allow continuous operation of the apparatus. The electrodes are supported from removable stoppers.
