Abstract

1388008 Bipolar electrodes RHONEPROGIL 19 Dec 1972 [21 Dec 1971] 58606/72 Heading C7B A bipolar electrode, for a cell for electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solution to produce alkali metal chlorate or alkali metal hydroxide and chlorine, has an apertured anodic part 7 comprising Ti, Zr, Nb, W, Ta or alloy thereof covered with a conductive layer of Pt group metal or alloy, e.g. an expanded Ti sheet electro-deposited with Pt-Ir, and an apertured cathodic part 9 comprising Fe, Ni or alloy thereof e.g. a steel grid, separated by a sealing partition comprising a plurality of mixed members 1 comprising a laminate of a cathodic metal or alloy 5 e.g. of mild steel and an anodic metal or alloy 4 to form an electrical connection between the parts. Preferably the mixed members are elongated and arranged parallel to one another, connected together by two metal sheets 2 and 3 comprising an anodic and a cathodic metal or alloy respectively to form the partition dividing the anodic zone 10 from the cathodic zone 11. The parts 7 and 9 may be connected to the mixed members 1 by welding using intermediary spacers, e.g. Ti plates 6 and steel plates 8; alternatively spacer 6 may comprise a metal core e.g. of Cu or Al sheathed with an anodic metal or alloy e.g. Ti. A current distribution conductor formed of a conductive metal sheathed with an anodic metal or alloy e.g. Ti may be welded by its sheath to the anodic part. The parts may be planar or corrugated (Fig.2).
