Abstract
914,724. Grabs for handling material. WHITLOCK BROS. Ltd. April 21, 1959 [March 11, 1958], No. 7818/58. Class 78 (4). So that a ram 22 (Fig. 2) will provide a substantially constant torque to operate the jaws 12 of a grab, the ram acts on a yoke 23 connected to the jaws by links 30, the pivots 31 of which on the yoke are offset from the planes of the pivots 11 of the jaws. In the form shown the yoke 23 slides on guides carried by angleirons 18 which carry the cylinder of the ram 22. The ram rod 24 is connected at 27 to the yoke which consists of a pair of parallel connected plates. The invention may be applied, as shown in Fig. 4, to grabs having more than two jaws. The grab may be supported from a boom by a universal joint 2 which includes a friction damper 4. The hydraulic ram 22 may be replaced by an actuator of another type.
