Abstract

979,536. Shovelling equipment. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 20, 1963 [July 10, 1962], No. 24538/63. Heading E1F. The length of a fluid-actuated jack 44, such as provided for tilting the shovel of a shovel excavator, is indicated by an associated mechanism comprising a cam 50, a cam follower 64, a pointer 72, and an index. The cam is rigidly secured to the cylinder 53 of the jack 44 whilst the cam follower 64, preferably integral with the pointer 72, is pivotally mounted at 48 on the piston rod 58 of the jack. The movement of the cam follower over the cam resultant to actuation of the jack causes the pointer to swing past the index rigidly mounted on the jack. An alternative form of a cam and follower to the one shown is also described. The cam is a rod extending from the piston rod end of the cylinder parallel to the rod, whilst the follower is formed of a pair of spaced triangular plates between which the piston rod is accommodated. One pair of vertices of the plates form the pointer, whilst a plate is transversely secured between the plates adjacent another pair of vertices with the inner end of the plate spaced from the piston rod so that the inner edge of the plate, which serves as a cam follower, can run along the cam rod and one side of the plate can slide over the end of said rod.
