Abstract

1,061,175. Fluid-pressure actuators. T. HINDMARCH. March 3, 1965 [March 16, 1964], No. 11071/64. Heading F1P. A pneumatic or hydraulic actuator comprises an actuating piston 1 movable along a cylinder and an abutment, formed by a further piston 7, movable along the cylinder to a predetermined position determined by a fixed projection 5 (e.g. an annular ring) in the cylinder wall, to retain the actuating piston in a position intermediate its end positions. In the embodiment shown, the actuating piston has a piston rod 9 extending in one direction into a further cylinder 10, and the abutment piston lies on the other side of the piston. The piston 1 is movable to the right or left of the position shown by pressure fluid introduced at 12, 13, but otherwise is retained in the intermediate position shown by fluid at the same pressure on the abutment 7 and in the cylinder 10. In a modification Fig. 4 (not shown), there are three abutments (7, 7a, 7b) which with the actuating piston divide the cylinder into five spaces. The application of pressure to each of these spaces moves the piston 1 to a particular position, the movement of the piston (1) and of the abutments being restricted by projections (5, 5a, 5b). In another embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown), the actuating piston is in its single intermediate position, held by an abutment (7, 7a) on each side, and in a modification Fig. 2 (not shown), the piston has a central annular projection (15) and the abutments are mounted on the periphery of the piston and are held against the annular projections (5 and 15) by fluid-pressure at the two sides of the piston. Reduction of the pressure at one side causes the piston to move, carrying one abutment with it.
