Abstract
1316836 Actuators G M BARRETT 23 June 1970 30300/70 Heading B3B A precision movement mechanism, e.g. for moving a slide 13 carrying a workpiece 15 along a bed 11 to engage a tool 16, comprises an actuator having a plurality of coaxially arranged elements 21, each element comprising a pressure fluid cylinder having an open end and a closed end, each closed end defining a reference surface, means being provided for mounting said cylinders so that the reference surface of each cylinder, except for one of the end elements, abuts an adjacent surface of another element; each cylinder housing a piston which is movable therein and which has a part which can project from the open end of the cylinder and engage the reference surface of the adjacent cylinder, said part being fully retractable into said cylinder, each element having an adjustable abutment arranged between the piston and the cylinder to limit the projection of said piston part beyond said cylinder through said open end. The mechanism includes a control arrangement 22 for supplying a pressure fluid or a vacuum to a selected combination of elements 21. A valve block is provided having a valve for each element 21. The required valves are operated by a punched card.
