A toggle shears mechanism for separating a gob from a mass of plastic glass depending from a glass melt comprises a pair of cutting arms 1, 2 each pivoted about a fixed intermediate fulcrum 3, 4 and connected by a pair of links 10, 11 to a piston rod 13, the arrangement being such that the cutting arms are closed when the piston rod is in the middle of its stroke, the links then being parallel to the line joining the fulcra. The double acting piston 14 is provided with fluid inlets and outlets at both ends of the cylinder for alternately admitting and expelling driving fluid on the two sides of the piston.
