Abstract

[Class 56] A rapid closing and opening of the shears 1, 2 which sever into predetermined mould charges the stream of glass 3 coming from the furnace is provided by arranging that both closing and opening are effected by the movement of the operating member in the same direction. The operating member comprises a longitudinally reciprocable rack 63; forward movement of the rack closes and opens the shears; reverse movement likewise closes and opens them. The rack is not directly connected to the pistons of piston and cylinder. mechanism 64, 61 but its ends are contacted by, and the rack is moved by, each piston alternately. Admission of fluid pressure alternately to each cylinder is controlled by valves operated by electrically controlled timing means. The rack engages a gearwheel 59 carrying a crank 54 linked (56) to a slide 40 which is connected to a cross-head 33 linked (34) to the levers 4, 5 carrying the shears.
