Abstract

706,366. Pneumatic single stroke apparatus. M.A.F. SOC. CIVILE D'ETUDES POUR MATERIEL DE FONDERIE. Nov. 13, 1951 [Nov. 15, 1950], No. 26546/51. Class 8 (2). [Also in Groups XXII and XXIX] A fluid pressure reciprocating motor, used in particular for opening chilled casting moulds, has a pneumatically actuated member coupled directly to the part to be moved and a hydraulically operated member connected through a lost-motion connection with the pneumatic member, whereby the hydraulic member is used for producing a high power output for part of the operative cycle of the servomotor, in particular for initially separating the moulds and the pneumatic member is used for producing a low power output for a part of said cycle. The motor comprises coaxial cylinders 1, 2 containing pistons 3, 4 respectively actuated by gaseous fluid. The piston 3 is connected to a device to be operated. An annular space 11 containing liquid communicates through a duct 11' with the internal space 7<SP>1</SP> movable in an intermediate cylinder 5<SP>1</SP>. The space 7<SP>1</SP> communicates through ports 12 with an annular space 13. Gaseous fluid under the control of a manually or automatically operated distributer is admitted through a pipe 22 and moves the piston 4 to the right whereupon a plunger portion 10 thereof enters the space 7<SP>1</SP> and pressurises the liquid trapped therein which acts differentially on the piston 7 and moves it to left.. The latter is connected by a rod 8 with the piston 3 which is thus moved simultaneously to commence its power stroke and first uncovers a port 20". The elastic fluid in the cylinder 1 thus acts through a conduit 20 on the right hand side of the piston 3 and assists its movement to the left. Movement of the piston 7 is stopped by its engagement with the left hand end of its cylinder whereupon the piston 3 moves alone to complete the power stroke. During the latter a pipe 23 is open to exhaust. The return stroke is effected by admitting gaseous fluid to the pipe 23 and opening to exhaust the pipe 22. Towards the end of its return stroke the piston 3 engages a head 9 on the rod 8 and returns the piston 7. In another embodiment the admission of gaseous fluid to the cylinder 1 is delayed until the piston 4 has moved a considerable distance in its cylinder and the initial separating movement of the nioulds is effected by liquid-pressure only. The hydraulic piston 7 may be'effective during the whole of the power stroke.
