Abstract
914,475. Locking nuts. STOVER, J. H. April 10, 1961, No. 12787/61. Class 89 (1). A lock nut, formed by compressing one end of a nut blank across two opposing flats at their top portions 16 for a distance onethird down the flats, is given a phosphate black, cadmium or zinc coating and then, on top of that, a lubricant coating of hydrogenated castor oil wax, paraffin, stearic acid, lanolin and sodium nitrite applied with water and an emulsifier. The nut blank has a coned top 11 and a washer face at the bottom and limits are specified for dimensions of these and for the width across the flats, the height of the blank and the minor axis of the nut hole produced by the compression. A mandrel is placed in the nut hole to give a stop portion for the compressing action which may be performed by apparatus as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,464,729. The compressing is said to produce a locking friction of 115D<SP>2.4</SP> to 820D<SP>2.5</SP> pound-inches of torque, where D is the nominal diameter of the mating bolt.
