Abstract

913,765. Charring carbonaceous material. ASPEGREN, O. E. A. Jan. 16, 1959, No. 1766/59. Class 55 (2). Small pieces of a carbonaceous material, e.g. wood, peat or coal, are charred in a pile by supplying an oxygen-containing gas, e.g. air or oxygen-enriched air, to the pile after initiating a combustion zone, the oxygen-containing gas being supplied through a series of perforated pipes extending transversely of the pile at the bottom thereof and the combustion zone being caused to advance through the pile by discontinuing the supply of oxygen-containing gas through a pipe as it is approached by the combustion zone and continuing the supply at a pipe positioned in the direction in which it is desired that the combustion zone shall move and sufficiently near to the combustion zone to maintain combustion. The perforated pipes may be coupled to a common duct for the supply of oxygen-containing gas and may extend from one or both sides of the pile. Pipes 2 after being used to supply the oxygen-containing gas may be withdrawn or used to supply a cooling gas to the charred material. The pile may be sealed and provided with stacks to remove charring gases and may be a long rectangular pile or an annular one.
