Abstract
912,709. Projectile fuzes. JUNGHANS A.G. GEB. Aug. 12, 1959 [Aug. 12, 1958], No. 27580/59. Class 9 (1). A percussion fuze for unrotated projectiles has an axially-bored body 10 housing a striker 12 having a tapered head 16a surrounded by a ring 47. The shank of a firing pin 16 is engaged in the striker, the pin being locked during transport by a pivoted slide 21 which has a bent-up end forming a finger 23 bearing against the outer sleeve 27 of a two-part brake mechanism surrounding the striker and controlling the arming of the fuze. A stud 33 engaged in a longitudinal groove 32 prevents rotation of the sleeve 27, which is provided with a rack 35 engaging a pinion 24 rigidly connected to an escapement wheel 25 controlled by an anchor, Fig. 7. A spring 28a housed in the sleeve 27 supports a second sleeve 22 which is also supported by a spring 28. To render the fuze sensitive to oblique impact, a casing 11 covering the body 10 has an extension 43 filled with elastic material, e.g. a thermoplastic vinyl resin, in which a cone 46 of sheet metal may be embedded. The cone bears against the striker head and is perforated. On launching a projectile fitted with the fuze, the sleeve 22 sets back due to inertia and stresses the driving spring 28a. At the same time, support spring 28 is compressed and a U-shaped spring 29 snaps into a groove 30 to hold the sleeve 22 retracted. As the projectile decelerates, the spring 28a drives the two sleeves forward, at a rate controlled by the rack and pinion, until the finger 23 is freed. The slide 21 is then rotated by its spring 41 and frees the firing-pin for operation on impact.
