Abstract
1,083,525. Projectile fuzes. INDUSTRIAL HOLDING ESTABLISHMENT. May 27, 1965 [May 27, 1964], No. 22565/65. Heading F3A. A clockwork projectile fuze functioning on impact in which arming is controlled by a balance wheel 15 has manually adjustable means which can be selectively moved according to the delay in arming required from a locking position to positions in which springs 36, 40 respectively are aligned with a rack 16 connected through a gear train to an escapement wheel 24 which meshes with the balance wheel 15, the springs being of different driving strengths. Before launching the projectile, rack 15 occupies the position shown in Fig. 1, a blind hole 43 being aligned with the firing pin 11, which is supported by a spring 10 and attached to a piston 9 slidable in the fuze cap 2. The adjusting set-screw 5 extends between the ends of a split ring 3, so that as the screw is turned the ring expands to the position of Fig. 1 and locks the cap 2 to the fuze body 1 in the axial direction. On rotation of the cap 2 relative to the body 1, a finger 29 depending from the cap rotates the housing 18 of the arming mechanism within the body 1, so that rack 16 is brought into alignment with spring 36 or 40 as the case may be. Angular movement of the cap is limited by a stop 31 co-operating with the ends of split ring 3. When the projectile is launched, a hollow pin 50 locking the balance wheel 15 sets back due to inertia until its reduced neck portion frees the balance wheel. The pin 50 is locked in the rearward position by a spring 54, which moves into a groove 60. Rearward movement of the pin 50 cannot take place until the fuze is set, when enlarged ends of a slot 55 are brought into alignment with the pin head 56. On unlocking of the balance wheel 15, rack 16 driven by spring 36 (or 40) moves until its detonator 44 is aligned with firing pin 11 and chambers 45, 46. The fuze is then armed for firing on impact. If on impact, piston 9 is not driven in, as with a glancing blow or fall on water, housing 18 moves forwards due to its inertia and brings the detonator 44 against the firing pin.
