Abstract
<PICT:0911515/III/1> In the zone-melting of a silicon rod by means of an induction heating coil, the heating effect of the coil is first automatically increased by means of a control device to form a molten zone, whereupon commencement of rotation of the lower end of the rod as a result of a torque applied continuously thereto actuates the control device to cause relative upward movement of the coil with respect to the rod, and an initial stretching and a final compression of the two ends of the rod. The control device may be actuated, by commencement and termination, respectively, of the rotation, to effect alternate decrease and increase in the heating effect of the coil. As shown, a rod is held between holders 15 and 17 in a frame 3 which is vertically movable by means of a driving device 16 actuated by control device 22, and the molten zone is formed at the lower end of the rod by means of a stationary induction coil 5 connected to a generator 24, a transformer 23, and control device 22. Holder 17 is capable of vertical movement in frame 3 by the action of a motor 18 operated by control device 22, and holder 15 forms a friction coupling with a continuously rotating sleeve 12. On formation of the molten zone and consequent rotation of holder 15, light passing from a source 20 is intermittently cut off from a photo-electric cell 21 by rotation of an apertured wheel 19 connected to holder 15 and control 22 is thereby actuated to effect upward passage of the molten zone. Commencement and termination of the operation is effected by engagement of a stop 25 on frame 3 with limit switches 26 and 27 connected to control device 22. The operation may be repeated.
