Abstract

<PICT:0910078/III/1> <PICT:0910078/III/2> A vertical rod is zone-melted by the passage simultaneously of a plurality of spaced molten zones, each of which covers only part of the cross-section of the rod, but which together cover the entire cross-section of the rod. Circle or oval-shaped induction heating coils may be used. As shown, a rod 18 between holders 2 and 3 is heated by a relatively moving device comprising induction coils 4, 5, 6, and 7 connected in series. Each of induction coils 4, 5, and 6 produces a molten zone 8 surrounding an unmelted eccentric core 12, whereas coil 7 produces a completely molten zone. The lower holder 3 may be rotated. The distance between successive induction coils may be 4 cm. The cross-sectional area of the core may be one quarter to one hundredth that of the rod.
