Abstract

A mineral oil contains, as a metal deactivator, 0,001-0,1% by weight of (a) a hydroxy-naphthoic acid in which the hydroxyl and the carboxylic groups are linked to adjacent nuclear carbon atoms or (b) a derivative of such a hydroxy naphthoic acid containing one or more alkyl groups as nuclear substituents. The mineral oil may be a lubricating oil or a transformer oil or other insulating oil. Ingredient (a) may be 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid or 2-hydroxy-3-naphthoic acid, while ingredient (b) may be tertiary butyl-2-hydroxy-3-naphthoic acid. An antioxidant of the phenolic or amino type (e.g. phenyl-alpha- or -beta-naphthylamine, 2,6-ditert. butyl-4-methyl-phenol or 2,4-dimethyl-6-tert. butyl-phenol) may also be added to the oil.
