547,973. Lubricants. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Nov. 17, 1939, No. 30307. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1939. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 17, 1940.] [Class 91] Lubricants comprise a hydrocarbon lubricating oil compounded with a small amount of a metal salt of an alkyl-phenol containing a nitro, amino or alkylamino substituent in the ring, with a view to retarding the deterioration of the oil at elevated temperatures. Metals specified are magnesium, calcium, barium, tin, chromium, nickel and cobalt. Alkyl-phenols mentioned are tert-amyl-, isohexyl-, di-isobutyl- and di-tertbutyl-phenols, into which the nitro substituents may be introduced by direct nitration and the amino groups obtained by reduction; several methods are described for producing the metal salts. The phenols may be polycyclic as in diphenol and naphthols, whilst the alkyl groups preferably contain more than four carbon atoms. Salts of p-amino-amyl-phenol are expressly referred to. The salts are added in amounts of about 0.1 to 3.0 per cent., alone or in combination with other agents. Specification 537,816 is referred to.
