551,852. Hydrocarbon oil compositions; rubber compositions. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Dec. 27, 1940, Nos. 18153 and 18154. Convention dates, Dec. 27, 1939, and Dec. 30, 1939. [Class 91] [Also in Groups IV and V] Oxidation resisting hydrocarbon compositions, such as lubricants, fuel oils &c. or natural or synthetic rubber compositions contain a small proportion of a polyvalent metal salt of a dihydroxy-dialkyl-diaryl sulphide or polysulphide or a polymer thereof, or a selenide or telluride analogue, one at least of the valencies of the metal being connected to an alkoxy group. Thus the type compounds for divalent metals comprise OH-AR-Sx-AR-O-M-OR or OR-M-O-AR-Sx-AR-O-M-OR, where OR is the alkoxy group and the other letters have the significance of Specification 547,972. For trivalent metals, additional series of compounds are possible including salts comprised by the type compound The aryl group may include more than a single benzene ring, such as diphenyl, or condensed rings, such as naphthalene, and phenanthrene. The alkoxy group is preferable methoxy or ethoxy, and the metal is preferably Fe, Ni, Co, Mg, Ca, Ba, Sr, Al, Cr, Mn, Pb, Sn, Zn, Cu, or Cd. The methoxy nickel salt of tertiary amyl phenol sulphide is specified. This salt may be obtained by adding a dry methanol solution of anhydrous nickel chloride to a methanol solution of tertiary amyl phenol sulphide to which has been added a solution of metallic sodium in absolute methyl alcohol. The precipitate obtained is separated and the filtrate then stripped of alcohol leaving a solid which is combined with the precipitate, the total solids being finally warmed with naphtha, cooled and again filtered The resulting solution is freed of naphtha and the desired salt of formula is obtained. The compounds or mixtures thereof, alone or in admixture with corresponding alkyl phenol sulphides, are preferably added to lubricating oils in the proportion of 0.01-2 per cent. by weight of the oil, 0.1-1.00 per cent. being generally sufficient. The additives inhibit oxidation, sludging, and ring- sticking, and also reduce carbon, lacquer, and resin formation; in greater concentrations they improve oiliness. The function is somewhat. selective according to the metal of the salt used. Other additives may be incorporated in the compounded oils, such as other anti-oxidants, dyes. soaps, pour inhibitors and sludge dispersers.
