Abstract

514,052. Lubricating-compositions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. April 19, 1938, No. 11747. Convention date, April 17, 1937. [Class 91] The deterioration of lubricating oils by sludge formation is prevented by adding a small amount of a hydrocarbon thio- or isothiocyanate containing at least four C atoms. Preferably the compound is aliphatic and has six to eighteen C atoms. The lubricating composition is specially suitable for use with bearings of alloys containing Cd, Ag, Cu, Pb or Ni. Examples mention dodecyl thio- and isothiocyanate, phenyl-, cetyl- and 9, 10-octadecenylisothiocyanates, and 2-ethylhexyl- and octadecyl-thiocyanates, as additions to white mineral oil or petroleum lubricating oil.
