516,276. Lubricating compositions. UNION OIL CO. OF CALIFORNIA. March 17, 1938, No. 28000/39. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1937. Divided out of 513,774 under which a Specification was laid. open to inspection' under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 19, 1938. [Class 91] A lubricating oil which is freely liquid at ordinary temperatures is given a 0.8 to 3 per cent. addition of an oil-soluble metal soap of saponifiable petroleum acids produced by the oxidation of petroleum fractions including lubricating distillates and heavier fractions, the product possessing substantially the same viscosity as the original oil. The calcium soap is preferred and may be added as such or may be produced in the oil by saponification. A 0.05 to 0.2 per cent. addition of a stabilizing agent such as triethanolamine may be added. The oil may be rendered still more stable by adding 1 to 2 per cent. of water' and boiling. The petroleum acid may be obtained by the oxidation of paraffin wax obtained by dewaxing paraffin lubricating stocks with normally gaseous hydrocarbons at a low temperature. The composition is stable at extreme pressure. and does not deposit gum. Specification 513,774 is referred to.
