Abstract

A lubricant or hydraulic fluid comprises a base fluid and at least 40% by weight of a tertiary aliphatic amine which contains at least one group of from 8 to 18 carbon atoms and in which the sum of the carbon atoms of the three aliphatic groups is at least 24. The amine may form up to 90% of the mixture. The base fluid may be a hydrocarbon oil, a synthetic ester oil or a silicone oil. The amine may be one with 8-12 carbon atoms in each group, and especially a mixture formed by reduction of nitriles having 8 and 10 carbon atoms.
