Abstract

A lubricant consists essentially of a lubricating-oil having dispersed therein between ,05 and 1 per cent by weight of an aromatic compound containing a nuclear hydroxy or ether group and a nuclear tertiary alkyl substituent. The aromatic compound may be phenol, a homologue thereof, or an aromatic-aliphatic ether, containing a nuclear tertiary alkyl substituent, e.g. tertiary butyl cresol or the ethyl ether thereof.
