A substantially square horizontally gyrated sieve unit comprising a frame a and screen surface b is fed with material through an inlet opening c extending along one side of the frame, and the overtails pass to an outlet d1 extending along that side of the frame at right-angles to the inlet side, and is opposite to the side adjacent to the relatively faster flowing part of the material. The outlet extends from the end of the side remote from the feed end and occupies a distance in the range between one half and nine-tenths of the length of the side.
