Streams of a fluid are directed against the underside of a horizontal screen, the screen and streams being relatively moved so that all parts of the screen are subjected to the streams. As shown, streams of air emerge from apertures 12 of a conduit 11 rotating in bearing 7, and impinge on a screen 1 on which is placed the material to be sifted; the fines are drawn off through conduit 5. The conduit 11 may be stationary, and the screen I may rotate.
