Abstract

908,235. Knitting-machines. SOC. BELGE D'OPTIQUE ET D'INSTRUMENTS DE PRECISION. Dec. 19, 1958 [Dec. 20, 1957], No. 40977/58. Class 74 (2). The rock-shaft 18 for imparting vertical movement to the needles of a straight bar machine is oscillated by two truck levers 24, 28 attached to the shaft 18, the trucks 25, 29 of which levers engage separate cams 20, 22 on the cam-shaft 10 of the machine at points on opposite sides of the cam-shaft so that the motion of the needles is positively controlled both upwardly and downwardly. The downward motion is controlled by lever 24 which is rigidly secured to the shaft 18 and the upward motion is controlled by lever 28 which is pivotally connected to a short arm 30 also rigidly secured to shaft 18. During normal knitting operations and fashioning, the cam-shaft being shogged to bring cams adjacent to cams 20 and 22 into effect during the latter operation, a link 34 pivotally and slidably connected by a pin 40 to the lever 28 is engaged with a pin 41 on the lever 24 so as to provide a substantially rigid connection between the two levers. A spring 36 on a shaft attached to link 34 and extending through pin 40 has a certain control to urge the levers 24, 28 slightly together and their trucks 25, 29 against their cams. A light spring 54 is also provided to urge the levers together and a spring 42 retains the link 34 in locked engagement with pin 41. For effecting an idling motion during which carriers may be brought into operation, for example, a solenoid 74 is energized during a draw operation whereupon a truck 62 is brought into engagement with a cam 64 with the effect that a pin 78 disengages link 34 from pin 41 on lever 24. Simultaneously a catch 80 is raised and, when the needles are subsequently lowered by cam 20, engages a pin 86 and retains the lever 24 in an inoperative position in which the needles are maintained lowered. This position is retained for one or more cycles of the machine during which the lever 28 pivoted about its pivot on arm 30 being constrained by spring 54 without affecting the needle motion. On completion of the idling motion the solenoid is released and the link 34 drops to re-engage the pin 41 when the lever 24 is released by the catch 80 and normal operations are resumed.
