With the arrangement described the needlebar and knocking-over bar are moved forward together in order to run a fresh blank on the needles and that part at the front of the needles conveniently placed in position on the knockingover bits before the latter and the needles are restored to their normal position.
In order that the knocking-over bar may be withdrawn independently of the needle-bar so that access may be had to the latter, a hand lever R is provided which is connected by a link S` to the arm O previously described so that by operating the hand lever R the shaft M can be angularly adjusted and the knocking-over bar withdrawn clear of the needle-bar. A catch may be provided in connection with the handle so that the knocking-over bar can be retained in its withdrawn position.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. A straight bar knitting machine comprising in combination, a thread guide, a needle bar, a set of needles carried by said needle bar, sinkers, a presser, means for operating the needles to cause them to knit, a knocking-.over bar disposed in front of said needle bar, knocking-over bits carried by said knocking-over bar, a main shaft having cam means thereon, an auxiliary shaft movable by the cam means on said main shaft, depending arms on said knocking-over bar and operated by connection with said auxiliary shaft for effecting raising and lowering of the knocking-over bar, a second auxiliary shaft movable by the means on said main shaft, a link connected between said knocking-over bar and said second auxiliary shaft for moving the knockingover bar toward and away fromsaid presser, and at least one abutment on said needle bar engageable with a corresponding abutment on said knocking-over bar for moving the said knocking- 'over bar forward when the needle bar is moved to its inoperative position.

A straight bar knitting machine comprising in combination, a thread guide, a needle bar, a set of needles carried by said needle bar, sinkers, a presser, means for operating the needles to cause them to knit, a knocking-over bar disposed in front of said needle bar, knocking-over bits carried by said knocking-over bar, a rocker shaft disposed in rear of said needle bar, an arm secured to said rocker shaft and'having a pin at the free end thereof, a depending arm connected to said knocking-over bar and having a forked end engaging said pin whereby to effect raising and lowering of the knocking-over bar upon movement of said rocker shaft, a second rocker shaft disposed in front of said needle bar, an arm secured to said second rocker shaft and having a pin at the free end thereof, a link having one end connected to said knocking-over bar and having a fork at the opposite end thereof in engagement with the second said pin, spring means for holding the fork in engagement with the second said pin whereby to effect movement of the knocking-over .bar toward and away from said presser upon movement of said second rocker shaft, and at least one abutment on said needle bar engageable with a corresponding abutment on said knocking-over bar for moving the knocking-over bar forward when the needle bar is in its highest position and is moved forward to its inoperative position.
3. A straight bar knitting machine comprising in combination, a thread guide, a needle bar, a set of needles carried by said needle bar, sinkers, a presser, means for operating the needles to cause them to knit, a knocking-over bar disposed in front of said needle bar, knocking-over bits carried by said knocking-over bar, a rocker shaft disposed in rear of said needle bar, means connecting said rocker shaft to said knocking-over bar for effecting raising and lowering of the said knocking-over bar, a second rocker shaft disposed in front of said needle bar, a link having one end connected to said knocking-over bar and having a. fork at the opposite end thereof, an arm movable with said second rocker shaft and having a pin in one end thereof engageable with the fork at the end of said link, a spring for maintaining the fork in engagement with said pin, a bell crank lever loosely mounted on said second rocker shaft, a main shaft having cam means for operating the bell crank lever, a second arm secured to said second rocker shaft, a pin on said bell crank lever engageable with said second arm for effecting movement of the knocking-over bar toward and away from said presser, and at least one abutment on said needle bar engageable with a corresponding abutment on said knocking-over bar for moving the knocking-over bar forward when the needle bar is in its highest position and is moved forward to its inoperative position.
4. A straight bar knitting machine comprising in combination, a thread guide, a needle bar, a set of needles carried by said needle bar, sinkers, a presser, means for operating the needles to cause them to knit, a knocking-over bar disposed in front of said needle bar, knocking-over bits carried by said knocking-over bar, a rocker shaft disposed in rear of said needle bar, means connecting said rocker shaft with said knockingover bar for effecting the raising and lowering of the said knocking-over bar, a second rocker shaft disposed in front of said needle bar, an arm secured to said second rocker shaft, a link having one end connected to said knocking-over bar and having the opposite end thereof in engagement with the end of said arm, a spring for maintaining the opposite end of said link in engagement with said arm, means for moving said second rocker shaft for effecting movement of said knocking-over bar toward and away from said presser, at least one abutment on said needle bar engageable with a corresponding abutment on said knocking-over bar for moving the knockingover bar forward when the needle bar is in its highest position and is moved forward to its inoperative position, a second arm secured to said second rocker shaft, a second link connected to said second arm, and a manually operated lever connected to said second link for moving the said second rocker shaft whereby to withdraw the knocking-over bar independently of the needle bar. l
