A nap-raising machine is provided with means for indicating the torque input to at least one roller of a series which means includes a dynamometer comprising a drive transmission assembly subject to a deflection, the magnitude of which is in direct proportion to the torque being transmitted, and means for visually indicating the magnitude of the deflection. A belt pulley 13, Fig. 2, loose on the end of a roller 11, transmits drive to the roller via a leaf-spring 18 secured at one end to the roller by a clamp 19 and at the other end to pulley 13 by two adjustable screws. The transmitted torque causes deflection of spring 18 and relative displacement between two commutators 14, 15 secured, respectively, to the pulley and the roller, the magnitude of the displacement being proportional to the torque. In each commutator, every third segment is connected together, and the commutators and their brushes 25, 26 are connected through slip-rings to a source of power and a meter so that the meter will indicate the torque. A suitable circuit is shown in Fig. 4a, the timing of the commutator switching being as in Figs. 4b and 4c, so that a square waveform current flows through meter M only when the commutators A, B are relatively displaced, the pulse length and hence the mean current being proportional to the displacement and hence to the torque.
