Abstract

907,250. Valves. AMERICAN IRON & MACHINE WORKS CO. Inc. Jan. 5, 1959 [Jan. 6, 1958], No. 375/59. Class 135. A sealing ring 60 of resilient material, e.g. a rubber compound having a durometer hardness in the range of 65 to 90, is provided with upper and lower conical seating portions 71, 70 respectively, these portions having straight line sides as viewed in cross-section and the included angle of the upper seating portion being ten to thirty degrees greater than that of the lower seating portion. The ring is inserted against a flange 40 provided on a valve spindle 50 and is retained by a plate 46 and split ring 48, a circular ridge 63 on the flange 40 locating in a complementary recess in the ring. Flange 40 also has a tapered seating surface correlative with a conical surface 17 of a valve seat 16 and with the portion 70 of the resilient ring. The upper tapered surface 71 constitutes part of a deformable tip 73 which deforms against a rounded part 18 of the valve seat as the valve is closed. This tip may present an included angle in the range of forty-five to ninety degrees.
