Abstract

906,902. Exciting electric motors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 27, 1959 [Feb. 28, 1958], No. 6580/58. Class 35. Series and separately excited windings of a traction or other motor are de-coupled to minimize the effect of line surges by splitting the main poles into two sections A, B and placing one of the windings on each section. The polesections may be unsymmetrical and of different span, and as shown section A carrying the series winding 2 is of smaller span than B which carries the separately excited winding 3. Conventional commutating poles 4 are also provided. The invention may be applied to multipolar machines having slotted stators. The two field components may be differentially controlled to give a constant speed characteristic. The separate excitation is of low voltage to further reduce surges.
