Abstract

A steel which can be chromized by diffusion from a chromium and/or ferrochrome packing without the packing sintering to the surface during chromizing contains: .C.max 0.1% .Si.0.5-1.5% .Cu.0.3-1.0% .Ti.max 0.5% The remainder being iron with usual amounts of phosphorus, sulphur and manganese impurities from smelting. The titanium may be replaced partially or wholly by tantalum and/or niobium. In addition, manganese (3-5%) may be added when copper may be absent or up to 1% with carbon up to 0.2%. A thermal treatment may be carried out after the chromizing to improve strength and toughness, e.g. heat article to 950-1100 DEG C., quench in water and then anneal for half an hour at 500 DEG C.
