Abstract

906,197. Pipe joints. TURNERS ASBESTOS CEMENT CO. Ltd. July 11, 1961, No. 25088/61. Class 99(1). In a spigot-and-socket joint between tubular members 1 of asbestos-cement or other material that expands on taking up moisture a spacer 5 is interposed between annular surfaces on the members and is of a material sufficiently resistant to axial deformation to stop travel of the spigot into the socket during normal assembly, but crushable during axial expansion of the assembled joint produced by moisture absorption. As shown, the annular faces are formed by a shoulder 6 on the spigot and an end of a coupling sleeve 4. The spacer comprises a ring of layers of paper, one or more layers being corrugated with the corrugations extending axially.
